As more renewables-based electricity enters the grid and energy systems evolve in multiple ways, energy storage will become an increasingly hot topic. It is one that involves a variety of energy system stakeholders, from power producers to grid operators and to energy consumers in all the main sectors of the economy.
R&D needs in this domain were the focus of a 14-16 July workshop organised by the IEA programme on energy conservation through energy storage (ECES). It took place in Bad Tölz (Germany) under the banner The Role of Energy Storage in Future Energy Systems and brought together experts from various backgrounds to map out ways of working together to advance R&D on high-profile energy storage.
